1970 Pittsburgh Penguins vs St Louis Blues.
Photos tell stories. They give us a glimpse into the past. My father covered the Penguins from the beginning. It was very different back then. We all know the Pittsburgh Penguins of today. Sidney Crosby,Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin. But the team was around way before Mario Lemieux.

In 1967 the NHL add six new teams. The orginal 6 and the new 6. The Penguins were part of the new 6.
My father Ross was an avid sports fan. and was excited to cover the new team. Besides hockey, he had a new camera. a 35mm SLR. This camera looked like a modern DSLR. But was film and all manual. You needed to set everything by hand. Photographers in the 1960’s needed to understand light. To do this they used a light meter. The meter would tell them how to set up the camera. Then you were ready to take photos. The cameras of the 1960’s and 70’s did not have bust mode. you took one photo at a time. And a photo needed to be developed first to view it.

Developing fiim was a process and an art. But there was a formula. Each type of film used a different mixture. The right amount of hot water mixed with chemicals. Then let sit for a certain amount of time.
When all these steps were done you had a photo. Were they good photo? No! Most of the time not. On a 24 frame roll of film you may have had one good photo. These photos sat in a box from the early 1970’s to 2025.
