A Christmas tradition dating back over 100 years.

Christmas and the Holiday season start on Lightup Night. Light Night is the weekend before Thanksgiving.

What was Pittsburgh Sparkle Season

Back in the 1980’s, there was an uproar about the Christmas season. The city called it Christmas but there are many holidays in December. People were mad and didn’t want to say Happy Holidays or the holiday season. So,the city called it Sparkle Season. The reason glowing lights. The season of lights glowing candles or bright lights. And a Sparkle of hope for the new year.

Over the years people accepted the phrase, Holiday season. And Sparkle season is just a memory.

The city comes alive after lightup night.

oseph Horne's or Horne's, was an American department store chain based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The store was one of the oldest in the country being founded on February 22, 1849, but was often overlooked as it maintained only a regional presence.[1] The chain ceased operations in 1994 after being merged with the Lazarus division of Federated Department Stores

The Horne’s Tree.

The lighting of the Horne’s Christmas tree at the once flagship store of Joseph Horne Company has been a holiday tradition for years. The Buiding is now owned by Allegheny Health Network (AHN)

The tree from Pittsburgh Past.

The six-story electric tree occupied a place on the corner of the building at Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street and viewers would crowd the area for a show and the lighting. Crowds also eagerly awaited the Christmas window displays at Horne’s.
